Configure your own Knaus motorhome in Ireland
Donegal Motorhomes is the sole official Knaus Tabbert agent in the Republic of Ireland. If you want a new Knaus built to your exact layout and specification, Liam Ruxton handles the configuration personally, either at the Letterkenny office or by Zoom or Teams. No sales team. No waiting for callbacks. You speak directly with the person who knows how to get you the right motorhome for you personally.

What is a Knaus motorhome configuration or custom order?
A Knaus motorhome configuration is the process of specifying a new motorhome to order rather than purchasing a fixed model from existing stock. As the buyer works directly with the agent to select the base layout, berth count, bed arrangement, kitchen and bathroom fittings, upholstery and optional factory extras before the vehicle enters production. Donegal Motorhomes, the sole official Knaus Tabbert agent in the Republic of Ireland, offers this service across the full Knaus motorhome range, covering models including the Van Ti, Van Ti Plus, L!ve Ti, Sky Ti, L!ve Wave, L!ve I and Sun I. Liam Ruxton manages every configuration personally, in Letterkenny or by video call, for buyers across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Liam knows how to turn your wishlist in to the ideal motorhome.
Common reasons buyers consider a custom build configuration
Donegal Motorhomes keeps new Knaus models and pre-owned motorhomes in stock, and many buyers find exactly what they need from the current range. Configuration or custom order is an added option for buyers whose requirements are more specific. Get what you want from day 1 and it will last you a lot longer.
- The layout of every stocked model nearly always almost fits, but the bed configuration or kitchen placement is not right for how you actually want to travel
- You are touring mainland Europe for extended periods and want a specification built around long-stay comfort rather than weekend use
- Your group or family size means you need a precise berth count that is not available in current stock. Maybe an interchangeable bed layout. You might need to consider a canine friend? Or AirCon? Or outside connected gas BBQ?
- You want specific factory-fitted extras, such as solar panel provision, a particular heating system or a bike rack, maybe ski specific space, included in the build rather than added later
- You want the specification locked in before the 2027 model year opens for factory orders, and need Liam to match your requirements against pre-ordered or immediately available stock in the meantime. And Liam has to manage all your expectations within the legal allowable weight, which is usually quite a challenge. But Liam knows his weight and motorhomes, so well.
- You are upgrading from a previous motorhome and already know exactly what did not work in the last layout - that is the most common experience. Truth be told for most people the first motorhome they buy does not work out for them. You learn as you go over the years. Or you can get it right first time if you work with Liam to create your own bespoke motorhome, that will last you much longer.
What you can specify in a Knaus configuration
The Knaus configurator works through a layered filtering process. Liam walks buyers through each stage, so the specification reflects actual travelling needs rather than a list of ticked options.
Layout and floorplan. Knaus offers close to 30 floorplan variants across its motorhome range. The floorplan finder filters by vehicle category, berth count and bed arrangement to identify the layouts that fit your requirements exactly. The menu of options is pretty awesome.
Bed configuration. Options include longitudinal single beds at the rear for independent access, a French double for couples wanting a corner arrangement, a transverse double that maximises rear garage storage and drop-down beds over-cab or ceiling-mounted for use during the day. Getting the bed right is really crucial for you, as this one detail will determine how long you keep the rig. It is hard to beat a good mattress and a good night sleep.
Kitchen and bathroom specification. Worktop layout, fridge size, shower or washroom configuration are specified within the model range chosen, rather than accepted as a fixed standard. The fridge could be more important to you than the shower. Most weathered motorhomers rate the fridge as their most important decision. Well that and the bed.
Upholstery and finish. Fabric and trim options are selected from the current Knaus range for the model chosen. The selection is great. Getting a new motorhome with new fabric is so much better than getting someone elses worn fabric, usually in a pattern you hate. Or with a smell you cannot get rid of totally.
Selection models and bundles. Knaus offers Platinum Selection and Vansation special editions that bundle the most popular bundled extras directly on the production line, including alloy wheels, painted bumpers, reversing cameras, satellite navigation with campsite software and integrated awning rails. These bundled models almost always represent better value than adding the equivalent options individually. And Liam will identify whether a Selection model satisfies your personal requirements before considering a bespoke build. Liam also knows the costs of other options that are available. He is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to your choices and best options.
Technology and comfort options. Solar panel provision for trickle charge, upgraded heating systems, bike racks, ski rack, dual battery systems and automatic nine speed gearboxes can be added at the configuration stage. Liam monitors the critical 'payload calculation' as each option is added, since heavy factory extras reduce the remaining luggage margin on a 3,500 kg chassis on a B1 licence, if that is the max on your Irish licence. You might have a 5000 kg allowance on a C1 licence.
Liam talks buyers through what Knaus actually offers within each model range before anything is ordered, so expectations match what arrives. The consultation covers stocked vehicles as well as configured builds and Liam will tell you clearly if a stocked model satisfies your requirements. Truth be told everyone would like a new model, with all their preferred optional add-ons. But usually people settle for something that is available in stock that is close to their wish list. At least to get started. It is not a cheap hobby.
Driving licence and weight class in Ireland
Before discussing layouts, Liam establishes the weight class that applies to your configuration or driving licence. This is not an optional detail. It determines which chassis options are available, what the vehicle will legally weigh once specified and whether you can drive it on your current Irish driving licence and still be covered by your insurance.
| Weight class | Driving licence required | Best suited to |
| Under 3,500 kg | Standard Class B (car licence) | Couples and small families wanting compact or semi-integrated layouts without medical review requirements |
| 3,500 kg to 7,500 kg | Class C1 (medium vehicle licence) | Buyers specifying premium coachbuilt layouts with large rear garages, heavy onboard equipment or dual battery systems |
Irish driving licence categories are governed by the Road Safety Authority. The standard car licence (Category B) covers vehicles up to 3,500 kg. A Category C1 licence is required for vehicles between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg. If you are considering a larger coachbuilt layout with a rear garage and heavy optional equipment, Liam will confirm the likely finished weight during the initial consultation before you commit to any specification.
The Knaus configurator also enforces a European type approval formula that protects a minimum luggage allowance within every build. The calculation used is minimum payload (kg) = 10 multiplied by the number of sleeping berths plus the total vehicle length in metres. If your chosen options push the actual vehicle mass too close to the chassis limit, the system flags a conflict and Liam will discuss whether a heavier chassis or a revised specification is the better solution. He really does know his stuff and he has driven so many models himself and Geraldine.
Model year ordering and what is available now
Factory order slots for the 2026 Knaus model year are now closed for custom configurations. The Knaus configurator is currently in transition, with the full database refresh to 2027 specifications expected at the end of June 2026. This affects what Liam can order direct from the factory and how quickly your vehicle can be delivered.
Immediately available stock. Donegal Motorhomes holds some new 2026 Knaus models in stock. If your preferred layout is available, you can purchase and take delivery now without waiting for a 2027 factory build slot. You could get lucky. It could also be a lower price in 2026 to the same version in 2027.
2026 specification sheet. If you use the Knaus online configurator to explore your preferred 2026 layout before the database refreshes, Liam can use that exported specification code to match your requirements against pre-ordered dealer stock or physically available vehicles in the wider Knaus dealer network.
2027 factory builds. Once the configurator updates to 2027 specifications, factory order slots will open for custom builds. Liam will be able to confirm lead times and order windows as these become available.
The full Knaus motorhome range, including current model specifications and layout options, is published at the official Knaus Tabbert website. Liam has direct access to the Knaus Tabbert dealer network and can advise on availability and timing for your specific requirements.

Why buyers configure with Donegal Motorhomes
Sole official Knaus Tabbert agent in the Republic of Ireland. Donegal Motorhomes, established by Liam Ruxton in 2003, is the national Knaus agent for the Republic of Ireland and the longest running motorhome company in the country. Configuration orders for Knaus motorhomes in the Republic go through this agency as the only official channel.
30 years of mechanical experience behind every consultation. Liam Ruxton is a qualified mechanic with over 30 years of practical experience in the motorhome trade. His understanding of how a vehicle performs on the road is applied directly when helping buyers choose between layouts, chassis options and factory-fitted extras. This is not a sales pitch from a product catalogue. Liam is also a Motorhomer himself and Ger.
Direct access to Liam, not a sales queue. Every configuration consultation is handled personally by Liam Ruxton, whether you come in to Letterkenny, arrange a call or join a Zoom or Teams session. There is no sales team between you and the person who knows the Knaus range. Buyers from Wexford, Tipperary, Cork and across Northern Ireland have worked with Liam remotely for exactly this reason.
How the configuration process works
Step 1. Initial call. Contact Liam directly or email the office to describe what you need from a new motorhome, including who travels, how often and what has not worked in a previous vehicle.
Step 2. Weight and licence check. Before discussing layouts, Liam confirms the weight class that applies to your situation based on your current Irish driving licence category. This sets the chassis range before any layout discussion begins.
Step 3. Model and layout discussion. Liam walks through the relevant Knaus model range and the available floorplans within it, including whether a Platinum Selection or Vansation special edition satisfies your specification at better value than a bespoke build.
Step 4. Video consultation or office visit. Configuration is worked through in the Letterkenny office or remotely by Zoom or Teams, with Liam at his dedicated laptop to review layouts, options and payload calculations together.
Step 5. Specification confirmed and order placed. Layout, berths, fittings, upholstery and optional extras are agreed and recorded. If a factory build slot is open, the order is placed through the official Knaus Tabbert channel. If factory slots are closed, Liam matches your specification against the closest available pre-ordered dealer stock.
Step 6. Handover in Letterkenny. On arrival, Liam manages the handover in person, including a full walkthrough of the finished vehicle before it goes on the road. There is a manual and a supporting website. Liam gets loads of calls every year from Motorhomers who are on a campsite and forget how to make somethiong work, like the AC or the heat or the alarm.
How much does it cost to configure a Knaus motorhome in Ireland?
You decide that. The final price of a configured Knaus motorhome depends on the model range and the specification agreed during the consultation. A Van Ti or Van Ti Plus with a modest set of options sits at a different price point to a Sun I or L!ve I with a full premium specification. Donegal Motorhomes does not publish fixed configuration prices because the figure depends entirely on the choices you make. You choose the configuration and the price, there is no selling as such by Liam.
As a general guide, opting for a Platinum Selection or Vansation special edition model almost always produces a lower final price than specifying the equivalent extras individually on a baseline model. Liam will identify this during the consultation and present both options clearly before anything is ordered.
- Model range selected (Van Ti, Van Ti Plus, L!ve Ti, Sky Ti, L!ve Wave, L!ve I or Sun I)
- Berth count and bed layout or configuration, plus mattresses and covers
- Kitchen and bathroom specification
- Upholstery and finish options
- Technology and comfort extras including solar panel, heating upgrades, automatic gearbox or the all essential awning
- Chassis weight class, since upgrading from 3,500 kg to a heavier chassis affects the base price
- Delivery timeframe and whether a 2027 factory build or pre-ordered stock is used
Call Liam for an accurate figure based on your chosen specification. There is no obligation to order and no pressure on the call.
Motorhome configuration across Ireland and Northern Ireland
Donegal Motorhomes is based in Letterkenny, County Donegal and manages Knaus configuration orders for buyers across the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The Letterkenny location on the Ramelton Road makes it accessible from Derry, Strabane and Omagh in Northern Ireland as well as from across Donegal, Mayo, Sligo and further south. Buyers come from Cavan, Wexford, Tipperary and Cork for the specific reason that Donegal Motorhomes is the only official Knaus agent in the Republic. And many clients have been dealing with Liam for decades.
Buyers who cannot travel to Letterkenny can complete the full configuration consultation by Zoom or Teams. Liam works through the specification on his dedicated laptop and the order is placed remotely. Northern Ireland buyers are served under the same terms as Republic of Ireland buyers and Liam is familiar with the considerations relevant to buying across the border that apply.
Frequently asked questions about configuring a Knaus motorhome
What does it mean to custom configure your motorhome?
Configuring a motorhome for you means specifying the layout, berths/beds, kitchen and bathroom fittings and optional extras before the vehicle is built, as an alternative to choosing a model already in stock. Donegal Motorhomes offers this as an added service alongside its stocked range. See the new motorhomes in stock for vehicles available now without a wait.
Which Knaus models can be configured through Donegal Motorhomes?
The full current Knaus motorhome range can be configured, including the Van Ti, Van Ti Plus, L!ve Ti, Sky Ti, L!ve Wave, L!ve I and Sun I. See the Knaus motorhomes Ireland page for a full overview of each model.
Can I drive a configured Knaus motorhome on a standard Irish driving licence?
Most Knaus motorhomes are available with a gross vehicle weight under 3,500 kg, which is driveable on a standard Category B car licence in Ireland. Heavier coachbuilt models with large rear garages or extensive optional equipment may exceed 3,500 kg and require a Category C1 licence. Liam confirms the weight class during the initial consultation. The RSA driving licence categories page sets out the full requirements. You would be amazed at how many people drive overweight rigs where their insurance is automatically null and void in the event of an accident. Or if you get pulled over by the police or gendarmes whilst travelling.
How long does it take to receive a configured Knaus motorhome?
Lead times depend on the model range, the specification and whether a factory build slot or pre-ordered dealer stock is used. Factory order slots for the 2026 model year are currently closed and 2027 ordering opens later in 2026. Liam confirms the expected delivery window once the specification is agreed. Contact Donegal Motorhomes to discuss your timeline.
Does Donegal Motorhomes also sell motorhomes that are already in stock?
Yes. Alongside configuration orders, Donegal Motorhomes holds new 2026 Knaus motorhomes in stock and a range of pre-owned motorhomes for buyers who want to purchase and take delivery straight away. This stock moves very quickly, even though every buyer says that it is not exactly what they really want. Many buyers keep a rig for a year and then come back to trade in or up.
Is Donegal Motorhomes the official Knaus agent in Ireland?
Donegal Motorhomes, established by Liam Ruxton in 2003, is the sole official Knaus Tabbert agent in the Republic of Ireland and the longest running motorhome company in Ireland. Read more about Donegal Motorhomes and Liam's 30 years of experience in the motorhome trade.
What is the difference between a Knaus Platinum Selection and a standard model?
A Knaus Platinum Selection is a special edition model with a fixed set of popular factory extras bundled directly on the production line, including alloy wheels, painted bumpers, reversing camera, satellite navigation with campsite software and integrated awning rails. Choosing a Platinum Selection almost always produces a lower final price than adding the equivalent options individually to a standard baseline model. But you might want all the usual or optional bells and whistles. There is a limit which is based on weight not money.
What is a part exchange and can I use my current motorhome?
Part exchange on an existing motorhome can be discussed directly with Liam during the initial consultation, whether you are configuring a new Knaus or purchasing from current stock. Donegal Motorhomes holds a range of pre-owned motorhomes which may include vehicles taken in part exchange. We have a list of people waiting for a chance to buy a used motorhome. We service and fix up all our pre-owned stock before selling if we can.
Does Donegal Motorhomes service Knaus motorhomes after delivery?
Yes. Donegal Motorhomes provides motorhome servicing and habitation checks for Knaus motorhomes and other brands after delivery.
Where can I find Knaus motorhome parts in Ireland?

Do you offer servicing and Habitation checks?
Donegal Motorhomes offers habitation checks and services new and second-hand Knaus and other motorhome brands in Letterkenny.
